Wisconsin shore anglers told to stock skein as Lake Michigan kings near the piers

Green Bay and Lake Michigan shore season is close. The Sept. 9, 2026 Press Times piece says spawn-minded Chinook will invade the tributaries in the coming weeks. Shore-only anglers — and boaters who still walk piers — are told to stock fresh skein now, before the fish show at the rocks.

The practical tip: hang around fish-cleaning stations at Algoma, Kewaunee, Marinette, or Sturgeon Bay and ask trollers if they are saving skein. Cure it or freeze it in small batches. Fish chunks under a bobber, on a slip-sinker with a marshmallow, or drifted through deeper pools once kings, browns, and coho move to the piers and rivers.

Inland trout harvest on general waters runs through Oct. 15, 2026. Confirm county-specific trout pages and Lake Michigan tributary rules before you keep a salmon or trout. The DNR Root River weir page is still on its spring totals and will update again when the fall migration starts.
