Truckee River streamer bite turns on after an early September cool-down

Guide Matt Heron’s Sept. 6, 2026 Truckee River and Little Truckee report says a few days of rain, clouds, and cool nights knocked August heat and Hoot Owl closures into the rearview. California-side flows at filing were about 299 cfs in town, 488 at Boca, and 497 at Farad, with water 55–65°F.

Dry-fly fishing is thin in the summer-to-fall bug gap — occasional caddis, PMDs, midges, and BWOs, not a reliable surface day. Indicator and Euro nymphing plus hopper-droppers are carrying most fish. Streamers and Trout Spey turned on last week with the clouds, wind, and rain; Heron wants the big stuff in the box through fall.

The Little Truckee was about 45 cfs, gin clear. He is fishing 5–6x with small midges and perdigons, not streamers, and calls the upper parking lot crowded at midday. Walk. Confirm current CDFW trout rules and any remaining temperature restrictions before you keep fish.
