Maine streams stay artificial-only through Sept. 30 as lakes cool
Maine’s fisheries biologists posted a September 2026 regional fishing report as nights cool. MDIFW says many trout ponds — Oxford County waters such as Big Speck Pond in Norway and Oversett Pond in Greenwood among them — should see better brook trout catch rates once lakes mix. Rivers and streams are also picking up; the Little Androscoggin is called out for bass plus stocked brook, brown, and rainbow trout.
The gear change that started Aug. 16 is still in force on flowing water. General law on rivers, streams, and brooks through Sept. 30 is artificial lures or flies only, and the daily bag on those waters drops to one landlocked salmon and one brook trout. Lakes and ponds stay on their zone seasons — North Zone open-water fishing through Sept. 30 — so read the water, not just the calendar.
Confirm the 2026 Maine Fishing Laws and any special FLOAT rules for the pond or river you fish. Oct. 1 closes a lot of flowing water and North Zone lakes to all fishing.
