Colorado’s Crystal: lower river still on a CPW full-day voluntary close

The Crystal River is two fisheries this week. Crystal Fly Shop’s Sept. 2 report says Colorado Parks and Wildlife has a full-day voluntary closure from mile marker 64 on Highway 133 downstream to the Roaring Fork confluence — the lower valley floor, the bottom few miles. The other 30-plus miles stay open.

Upper-river flows were 50 cfs at Redstone and 9 cfs at Carbondale: low, clear, and cold. The shop says hoppers are strong, with PMDs, caddis, and BWOs mixed in, and cool mornings have put streamers in play. Stealth and covering water matter. The Crystal is also one of the last strongholds for mountain whitefish in the state.

Gunnison River Fly Shop’s Taylor/Gunnison notes add a separate CPW voluntary noon-to-midnight close from Whitewater Park to standing water at Blue Mesa. Confirm the live CPW drought-and-heat tracker the morning you drive — July lists go stale fast, and a shop sheet is not a substitute for the agency map.
