Upper Klamath weirs go in early: 35 Chinook at Shasta, Scott station this week

The lower-river adult quota is a different story from the tributary counters. Siskiyou News’ Sept. 13 recap of CDFW’s first 2026 in-season update says counting gear on the Scott, Shasta, and upper Klamath tributaries is going in earlier than either year since the dams came out.

Through Sept. 10, the Shasta River weir — in since Aug. 31 — had 35 adult Chinook, 0 coho, and 1 steelhead over 16 inches. Bogus Creek, in since Sept. 3, had counted nothing. Shovel Creek was due Sept. 14, Scott River by Sept. 18, and Jenny Creek before Oct. 1. Shovel’s 2024 start was Oct. 16; Bogus in 2025 did not start until Sept. 26.

Thirty-five fish this early is a start, not a run. These are preliminary passage counts, not basin escapement. This does not reopen adult kings below Weitchpec.
